I’ve always believed the most important man on the crew was the sprayer because he can make or brake the entire system by the quality and consistency he sprays coatings and by noticing and fixing any defects before he sprays coatings over. Therefore I don’t put a spray gun in just any ones hand and say get to it. Call backs don’t make us money. And happy customers build your business.
In 2002 I was contracted to apply a coating to an epdm roof that was about 3000 squares. It was specified to be sprayed in one coat, white over black epdm. It had to cover well, no shadows, but using too much coating could eat into profit real fast.
That’s when I searched for a spray device that could help us, not only on flat roofs but on metal roofs also. I couldn’t find anything you could use with 55 gallon drums or totes. Everything I saw you had to use with 5 gallon buckets, NO WAY!
That’s when I began designing something to help on these larger jobs. A few designs later, and I’m probably not done, I’ve created the Speed Sprayer. Now I couldn’t imagine doing a large job without it. Imagine one man running drums, one man moving the spray line and one man on the Speed Sprayer. That’s how we do it and on average we use 1, 55 gallon drum every 22 minutes using three spray tips. I use the auxiliary gun to do any touch-up as I move down the roof.
We use both speed-flow and graco pumps. I use ¾” line off pump and go down to ½” into the Speed Sprayer. You can use up to 4 tips at a time as long as you don’t exceed 80% of your pumps max. output or you’ll burn-up your pump.
The first job you spray with the Speed Sprayer it will take a few minutes longer to get used to adjusting the wheels on metal roofs so they ride between ribs, adjusting distance between spray tips so you don’t overlap your patterns too much, (spray tips adjust in one inch increments side to side and use a pressure clap to adjust tip height from roof surface).
Each sprayer comes with three spray tips. The outside two tips swivel to help spray the contour of metal panels with standing seams. Use a wet mil thickness gauge across the entire path of all spray tips to make sure your getting even coverage.
When a clog stops a line from spraying properly, you simply shut off the pressure to the other lines, via ball valves attached to manifold, reverse tip clogged, pull trigger on gun, reverse tip to original position and turn back on other ball valves.
Each sprayer comes with four tires attached to axles that slide into main frame of unit. Each axle is adjustable in one inch increments for desired position.
On flat roofs it works best to have the front or back two tires swivel, but on metal roofs it’s easiest to use all fix position wheels.
When finished for the day, simply shut spray tips closed, if you can’t leave line connected just cap off inlet with normal half inch pipe thread cap. When finished with project or not using for 2 or more days, it’s necessary to clean out sprayer. The easiest way is to clean out is by using your coating pump to flush entire system with water for water based coatings or mineral spirits for oil based. If your done with the Speed Sprayer but want to keep the coating in your line you can by use a hydraulic fitting which attaches to a water pressure washer line, then attach a half inch coupling from hydraulic fitting to male end from gun. Turn water on and bleed pressure washer line. Attach pressure washer line. Remove spray tips and place buckets underneath. Start pressure washer and keep pressure low. Pull gun trigger and run water until clear and shut off pressure washer. Pull gun trigger again to release any pressure and disconnect. Clean tips and install in shut off position. Cap ½” male end going into gun. Using same process with coating pump is much easier.
The quality of spray patterns depends on the viscosity of the coating. We primarily use water based coatings and the quality is excellent. Oil based coatings may need to be heated to flow properly and produce a good spray pattern.
